SHELLEY BRETON

Shelley has been painting and studying in oils for over 14 years.  She is a life-long Maine native, whose work is inspired by the effects of early and late-day light on the local landscape and seascape, as well as florals and figurative subjects.  With her expressive-representational style, Shelley strives to evoke a sense of mood, light and place.  "I am especially drawn to depicting the figure in the landscape.  The poignancy of our brief time in this amazing place...our 'smallness' and how we interact with the vast beauty of our world."

Shelley is also greatly inspired by the Spanish artist Joaquin Sorolla’s depictions of sunlight and shadow, and by John Singer Sargent’s mastery of the figure and his confident brushwork.  Shelley is a juried member of the Oil Painters of America and the American Impressionist Society, and was voted "One of Maine's most collectible artists" in the 2019 issue of Art Maine Magazine.
